Grade Point Averages explained

A BC Ferry en route to Vancouver.When your child is in high school, then their GPA (Grade Point Average) becomes important. High school students are continually assessed, so that all their work goes toward their GPA. If you are not aware of this, then it can be easy for your child's GPA to slip. Not returning their homework, or doing poorly in a pop quiz will all contribute to lower marks.

Grade Point Averages are calculated from the best 52 credits that satisfy the requirements for graduation. It is basically a weighted average.

Each course that is included is worth a certain number of credits, usually four. The GPA is calculated by multiplying the course credit by the numeric equivalent of the child’s letter score, and then averaging the total of these scores.

The scale is:

• A=4 points
• B=3 points
• C+=2.5 points
• C=2 points
• C-=1 point
