Burnaby is linked to North Vancouver by the Ironworkers Memorial BridgeBurnaby has evolved from an agricultural area through a suburban dormitory community to a largely urban city. As a convenient location in the geographical centre of Greater Vancouver it has attracted many people and businesses to settle there, making Burnaby the most densely populated area in the region.

Burnaby is located on the Burrard Peninsula between Vancouver to the west and New Westminster and Coquitlam to the east.

Sports facilities

• Burnaby Lake Sports Complex
  This offers a pool, sauna, whirlpool, weight room, tot pool and water slide. The arena has ice skating and activity rooms while the adjoining fields are used for soccer, grass hockey, football and lacrosse.
• Bonsor Recreation Complex at Metrotown
  This complex has a 37 metre pool, whirlpool, sauna and kids’ leisure pool. There are also two gymnasiums, weight room, dance/fitness studio, racquetball and squash courts and child minding .
• Swangard Stadium
  This is the home for the Vancouver Whitecaps professional soccer club and a host to other track and field and sports events .
• Riverway Public Golf Course
  This 18 hole course also has a covered driving range.
• Burnaby Mountain Golf Course
  Another 18 hole course with covered driving range.
• Pitch and Putt
  For the less ambitious golfer, there are two pitch and putt courses in Burnaby.

Parks

Burnaby is fortunate enough to have a number of spectacular public parks.

• Barnet Marine Park
  This park is on the Burrard Inlet and is great location for a day out by the water. You can swim, kayak, paddle, barbeque or just enjoy a water side stroll. In the summer there are showers and changing rooms available.
• BC Parkway & Highland Park Line
  This cycling, jogging and walking trail is 19 kilometres long and connects the Westminster Quay waterfront to False Creek in Vancouver.
• Burnaby Fraser Foreshore Park
  On the edge of the Fraser River, this park offers the chance to explore, fish or picnic alongside the river. There is even a pirate ship play area for the kids.
• Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area
  The park offers great water and city views and a grassed area for playing. There is also the Rose Garden, the totem poles and the Kamui Mintara sculptures. These consist of more than a dozen carved poles created by Japanese sculptors.
• Confederation Park
  Part of the park is undeveloped, with the Penzance trail wandering through unspoiled, dense forest. The south side has been developed and offers lawn bowling, bocce, tennis, baseball, soccer, lacrosse and track running. There is also a skateboard park.
• Kensington Park
  This park has a pitch and putt course and sports fields for softball in the summer and soccer in the winter.
• Burnaby Lake Regional Park
  In the middle of the city this park is a stunning wildlife sanctuary. It offers great bird watching opportunities as well as canoeing and sailing on the lake. The Burnaby Lake Sports Complex are in the west shore area of the park. There is also an equestrian arena on the eastern side of the park.
• Robert Burnaby Park
  This large, “hidden” park allows walkers and joggers to follow trails through forests, ravines and meadows. There are also picnic facilities, tennis courts and areas to play baseball (or cricket?).
• Central Park
  This urban forest of immense Douglas fir, western hemlock, poplar and maple trees is a reminder of the magnificent rainforests that once covered the Pacific North West. The park has tennis, pitch and putt, a large outdoor pool and a horseshoe pitch. It is also the location of the Swangard Stadium, home for the Vancouver Whitecaps professional soccer team.
• Deer Lake Park
  The beautiful park surrounding Deer Lake is not only a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city, it is also the home of the Burnaby Art Gallery, the Burnaby Village Museum & Carousel, the James Cowan Theatre and the outdoor Concert Bowl.

Housing:

Burnaby is a relatively high density area and this is seen in the numbers of apartments. There are also townhouses (low rise buildings with three or more strata units) and duplexes. However there are still a large number of houses, even though their turnover is lower.
