At the risk of boring everyone, I am talking about the Olympics again. We have been enjoying the whole experience and joined in with the crowds downtown.
It seems that the British press has not had such a rosy view of the Olympics. That is quite a contrast to the Canadian press. We know there have been problems with traffic, weather, access to venues and the tragic accident on the luge before the games even began.
All that considered the coverage has been positive. A yes intensely patriotic.
Not really a surprise if you have been in Canada a while. Canadians are proud of their country and their flag. It is hard to fail to notice that with all the flags, Olympic clothing and red and white everything!
One example we heard, literally, was when Canada won a gold in the speed skating, the crowd on Robson Street spontaneously began singing “O Canada”.
When we talk with other Brits here, it is interesting that only the newest arrivals are rooting for Britain. Most everyone else is chanting “Go Canada Go” – and meaning it. We may be new Canadians but we are enthusiastic.
Now let’s home Team Canada can win the hockey. Otherwise I suspect the flags will be at half-mast.
