I could not say that

Beach in Dundarave, awesome

Beach in Dundarave, awesome

I was listening to someone talk the other day and wondered how long I would have to live in Canada before I felt comfortable saying “dude”. The first time I heard it was listening to a mother picking up her 10 year old son – “dude, are you ready to go”. I had thought that only kids, snowboarders and skateboarders used it – but no. It seems that anyone can use it – though not me.

The whole dude thing got me thinking about other words and phrases that I find hard to use. Another one isĀ  “pants” – meaning trousers. For me pants brings to mind y-fronts, or other forms of underwear. And it is, or was, British slang for rubbish. This meal is pants, dude! Pants just don’t seem like something that guys (dudes) should wear.

I have had to say pants to get my meaning across, but it still doesn’t sit right – nor for that matter do my trousers!

Awesome is an over-used word. It means this is quite nice. My attempts to exaggerate by saying awesome don’t tend to come over all that convincing. Natural British reserve? Probably. I do use the word, but try to save it for special occasions – when something is really, really quite nice.

So dudes, have an awesome week, eh.
