I thought that this might be an interesting glimpse into life at a Canadian high school. Part of the graduation activities at Greg’s school is a game played by all the grads: “spy versus spy”.
The basic idea is that each grad is given the name of another and it is their job to “kill” them (not very politically correct I’m afraid). The kill is done by water pistol.
The school grounds and school buses are safe zones, as is your own house unless you invite the opposing spy in.
When you kill your opponent, you take over their target. You are not supposed to know who is after you, and with people being shot all the time the opponents are constantly changing.
Greg has had some close shaves. He normally gets the school bus, but one morning last week I drove him to school because he had his English AP exam. At the end of our road, two teens were lurking in a black car – very menacing.
Another day, Sue let one of Greg’s friends into the house before she realized he had a water pistol in his pocket. Greg managed to run out into the garden and I hustled his friend out. Greg lived another day.
I like that the grads get to let off some steam and escape the stress about their exams. It is a bit stressful for us since we now have to check who gets invited in and are running him to and from school when he feels that he is being menaced.
